Hi, my name is Lee an electrical engineer by trade, always loved VW’s but only purchased my first one in 2017 a Beetle called “Mildred” a White ex wedding car in fantastic condition, she never let me down and was an absolute joy to own which may be the reason i have rose tinted views on the old car / van situation. After owning the Beetle for around 18 months i started looking at vans, in particular older ones 1960’s etc.. but quickly realised complete ones were ridiculous in price and cheaper ones looked like well a bit of a project (little did I know at the time what a project really was) After what seemed like an age searching around on all the usual sites for something that might be affordable and easy to get in use i pretty much gave up on getting a van for the short term, however one evening i stumbled across a T25?? weird looking brick shaped thing, I had seen a few around and in pictures but didn’t pay attention really as it wasn’t what I was looking for at all, that being said i started to look at this van and its weird shape and blocky proportions as something of beauty (i had not been drinking) this particular one was a 1987 Komet, no idea what that was at the time but it was £500 and the auction was ending soon…..Bargain?
I started to look at the details and found it didnt come with an engine but the gearbox was there, all seats and some sort of camping interior (not Komet Interior i later found out) But its £500, i can get an engine cant i? easy enough, get someone to fit it and away we go, vehicle was described as rolling restoration, “just needs tidying up” so the bid was placed at £510, i convinced myself if i get it for that it would be a steal and any work would be a few quid after purchasing an engine, i never even though i would win it at that price, didnt tell the wife and went to bed.
Woke up to a few emails etc.. from eBay saying i was successful and to contact the seller!!!!! well reality started to bite hard as i realised it was collection and by trailer (obviously as no engine) but that collection point was 4 hours away at Barnard Castle, i arranged with the seller to meet and pay, take a quick look at the van and arrange a low loader to collect it a day or so later.
I arrived at the site (an old farm) and the guy opened the door to a white VW T25 1987 Komet High Top, I was excited, finally getting a van after months of looking, wasn’t my first choice but when i saw it and the chunky, clunky, brick, wedge shaped beast was right in front of me I knew this was what i really wanted all along, quirky, unique…weird van was perfect!!……..except it really wasn’t perfect in fact looking at it in the cold light of day it was far far from perfect, i now am led to believe that the seller started a small restoration and quickly found out that this van was fit for the scrappers, I however did not know this information and handed over my cash and arranged collection, didn’t matter to me that the side door was in the back cargo area (probably off for some good reason) seats were in the back too? camping interior was…well…horrible but that’s fine, recover and all good as new.
A couple of days later the van was collected and was being delivered to my house, i can finally get this small simple restoration going, bit of paint, recover the seats, and bed area, bit of carpet, get the engine fitted by someone that knows what they are doing, maybe a patch or two to weld up again by someone who knows what they are doing and away we go…..camping by the sea, cup of tea and a bacon sandwich in hand…….
Living the Dream!!!!!!!
Well it didn’t turn out quite like that and you will see the journey from the Blog pages to show exactly how it has and still is turning out
